Cigna
Philadelphia based CIGNA, whose headquarters are in Center City Philadelphia, is the oldest stockholder-owned insurer in the United States, dating back to 1792. Formed as the Insurance Company of North America (INA) by a group of Philadelphia’s upstanding citizens, it was also the first marine insurance company in America, insuring the hull and cargo of two Ireland bound ships in the same year it was formed.
The first life insurance policy was issued a mere two years later, insuring the life of a sea captain during his voyage at sea. That same year, CIGNA was incorporated and authorized to write policies for marine, fire, and life insurance. And so the insurance company now known as CIGNA was born. As it grew, it diversified into insurance including property and casualty and life insurance, and non-insurance related businesses such as pensions and mutual funds.
The name CIGNA is derived from the merger that occurred in the 1980s between INA and Connecticut General Corporation, formerly the Connecticut General Life Insurance Company (CG), which had been formed in the state of Connecticut in 1865. In 1984, CIGNA was the first insurer to enter the pre-paid dental market and began offering its own Dental PPO in 1996. CIGNA Vision Care was created in 2002.
Today CIGNA has three lines of business, CIGNA Group Insurance, CIGNA Healthcare, and CIGNA International with offices around the globe--all of them providing services for groups through employers and associations, or to individuals (CIGNA International only). CIGNA Group Insurance focuses disability, life, and accident insurance. CIGNA Healthcare is concerned with providing managed medical and dental care services such as health, vision, and dental plans, as well as indemnity and group life insurance for employees. CIGNA International provides clients around the world with employee benefits, financial services, health care, pensions, and life insurance.
