Founded in 1982, Health Plan of Nevada is Nevada's oldest and largest health maintenance organization (HMO). More than half of all health maintenance organization members in Nevada are enrolled in plans with Health Plan of Nevada.

Health Plan of Nevada is a subsidiary of Sierra Health Services, Inc., which incorporates a number of health-related organizations, each providing their own products or services. In 2003, Health Plan of Nevada earned a rating of "Commendable" from the National Committee for Quality Assurance (NCQA), an independent, not-for-profit organization that is dedicated to maintaining high standards of consumer protection and quality assurance and that evaluates the quality of health care coverage plans based on service and clinical quality.
