Horizon Blue Cross and Blue Shield
Horizon Blue Cross and Blue Shield of New Jersey is the state’s oldest and largest health insurer. During the early depression era in the 1930s, a small group of hospital representatives in the greater Newark area formed a health care council with the goal of helping both patients and hospitals. The Associated Hospitals of Essex County, Inc. was initiated in 1932 as the first multi-hospital prepayment plan. This was the beginning of what would become the first Blue Cross plan in the country. Based in Newark, Associated Hospitals of Essex County, Inc. began its services in 1933. The name of the company officially changed to The Hospital Service Plan of New Jersey in 1936, but came to be known as The Blue Cross Plan.
Blue Shield of New Jersey began with support from the Medical Society of New Jersey. It was incorporated on March 22, 1942. Blue Cross of New Jersey and Blue Shield of New Jersey merged as Blue Cross and Blue Shield of New Jersey in 1986. The company functioned as the state of New Jersey's "insurer of last resort" until 1992, providing health care coverage to anyone regardless of their medical status. Today, Horizon BCBSNJ is the biggest health insurer in New Jersey, with over 3.1 million subscribers. It is the state's only non-for-profit health services corporation.
Horizon BCBSNJ offers a number of plans for individuals and families.
The Basic Plan A/50 and Traditional Plans B and C allow you to visit any physician you choose. Plan A offers deductibles of $1,000, $2,500, $5,000, or $10,000 with a 50% coinsurance. Plan C offers a higher percentage of coverage than Plan B with a slightly higher but still competitive monthly rate. Plan D offers $80 coinsurance.
Horizon MSA Companion combines a Medical Savings Account with traditional health care coverage.
Horizon HMO provides very low out-of-pocket expenses at a competitive monthly rate. Basic plans require members to use in-network providers at very low costs.
Horizon also offers a number of group plans for employers. In addition, a range of dental plans for individuals, families, and groups are also available.
