Premera Blue Cross
Premera Blue Cross is a not-for-profit licensee of the Blue Cross Blue Shield Association. It operates in Washington and Alaska (under the name Premera Blue Cross Blue Shield) and provides coverage to more than 1.5 million members. Headquarters are in Mountlake Terrace, Washington, and satellite offices are located in Seattle and Spokane.
The original company began in 1933 as Medical Service Corporation. In 1945, the Washington Hospital Service was incorporated and in 1969, its name was changed to Blue Cross of Washington and Alaska. A 1994 merger with Medical Service Corporation prompted the name change to Premera Blue Cross in 1998. The organization has served Alaska since 1957.
In additional to traditional coverage, Premera offers a menu of PPO, HMO, PCP, dental, long-term care, and Medicare plans along with Exclusive Provider Organization coverage (EPO). Interim policies are also available from one to six months to bridge gaps in other medical coverage. Catastrophic plans range from $2,500 - $10,000 in deductibles. Plan options will vary between Washington and Alaska. Group/employer coverage is available throughout Alaska but is excluded in Clark County, Washington. Individuals (and families) may obtain coverage through a network of independent brokers.
In 2002, the organization introduced a unique health insurance family of products. Premera Dimensions is designed as a smorgasbord of benefits and options that can be customized for each employer, individual, or family. Members can select the type of benefits, level and choice of doctor care, and how treatment is managed rather than choosing packaged options at each price level. The model promotes reduced physician and administrative costs, increased patient information access, less paperwork, and improved communications between doctors and care-giving facilities.
